Chrysler: Then and Now
The Chrysler Six, the brand's initial automobile, made its debut in 1924, even before the brand was trademarked. It was seen as a revolutionary vehicle, introducing three industry-first innovations: an oil filter, full-pressure lubrication, and a high-compression engine, all at a competitive price. As he was restructuring the Maxwell Motor Company a few months later, in 1925, Walter P. Chrysler, a former president of Buick Motor Co., developed the Chrysler trademark. That same year, the brand purchased the American Motor Body Company and began manufacturing vehicles right away.
It was a few years later, in 1928, that Chrysler divided its resources, developing the Plymouth brand for the everyday driver and the DeSoto brand to highlight the company's higher-end vehicles. Not quite finished for the year, Chrysler merged with the Dodge Brothers, benefiting from an established system to ensure continued growth.
For Chrysler, the 1930s were a time of tremendous expansion and innovation. In 1934, the brand unveiled the Chrysler Airflow, a vehicle that prioritized aerodynamics and contemporary styling. The Airflow demonstrated Chrysler's dedication to pushing limits and had an impact on future automotive design despite its unusual appearance, which originally received negative feedback.
Like many other car brands in the 1940s, Chrysler assisted with the war effort, producing whatever it could for the United States military, from ammunition to trucks and even aircraft parts. It also joined other manufacturers to create what is now known as the Jeep, giving the troops a reconnaissance vehicle that was light and agile so it could easily traverse a variety of terrains.
After the war, Chrysler debuted the HEMI V8 engine, which was originally called the "FirePower." It was an overhead-valve V8 that produced 180 hp. Also, during the 1950s, the brand developed what would end up being one of its most iconic vehicles, the Chrysler 300. This high-performance luxury vehicle came to represent the pinnacle of American automotive perfection, continuing production until 2023.
The Dodge connection became a major focus in the 1960s as Chrysler began manufacturing full-sized unibody vehicles, which would later become the status quo for mass-produced vehicles. However, it was the company's influence on the muscle car market that the decade might be best remembered for. With vehicles like the Dodge Charger and Plymouth Barracuda, which became cultural icons thanks to how well they performed, Chrysler appeared to be off and running.
However, the oil crisis and shifting consumer tastes in the 1970s presented Chrysler with new challenges as the popularity of the muscle car waned. Those challenges continued for several years, even after Lee Iacocca was named president of Chrysler in 1978. However, with his dedication and leadership, along with funding assistance from the government, the brand pushed through this difficult time to introduce the automotive industry's first minivan.
With a win under its belt, Chrysler made a number of alliances and mergers in the 1990s and 2000s, including the purchase of the American Motors Company in 1987, which brought the Jeep to the lineup. The most notable alliance, however, came in the late 1990s when Daimler-Benz purchased Chrysler. The goal of this collaboration was to maximize the strengths of both companies, but in the end, the collaboration didn't produce the expected results and the two parted ways in 2007.
Two years later, Chrysler joined forces with Fiat, becoming Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, bringing new models and a fresh emphasis on quality and innovation. The Chrysler Pacifica was one of these new models. The Chrysler 200 was also introduced during this time, taking the place of the Sebring.
In 2021, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot S.A. joined forces to create Stellantis, with Dodge, Chrysler, Ram, Jeep, and Fiat under its wing. This collaboration means you have the backing of some of the strongest manufacturers in the industry, as well as a large selection to choose from when shopping with our team.
