While out for a test drive in one of the new Chryslers we carry, the song "Barracuda" by Heart came on through the Uconnect infotainment system. It got us thinking at Providence Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM: are there any of those models out there still driving? Luckily, there was one.
In the 1960s and '70s, Chrysler was a key player in the Group 1 Grand Prix races in Europe. With 62 wins on various tracks, and hill climbs, including four French Group 1 Championship wins they were a force to be reckoned with and all of it was due to the Barracuda. Now, many car aficionados know that the muscle car was sold under the Plymouth name here in the U.S. but across the pond it used the Chrysler badge. Recently, one of these Barracudas was uncovered in a little garage in France, brought back to the U.S. , and was restored.
This particular racing Barracuda, equipped with a HEMI engine that is an option on models like the Chrysler 300, had a 14 month make-over till it was ready to attack the track. With some help from Chrysler France, old photos, and finding what parts and accessories came with the car at the time, they were able to rebuild the legend.
The end result is a head turner, to say the least. The vehicle's owner plans to bring it back to France and race in some vintage rallies, re-living some of its storied past.
Of course, if you're looking for something a little more modern you can find models here in our Quarryville, PA showroom that share some of the heritage of the classic Barracuda. To learn more stop in and see us where we'd be happy to answer your questions.
